Chip Seal Guide Modified Asphalt

Improving chip seal performance | Asphalt magazine

Chip seals are one of the most commonly used pavement preservation techniques. Sometimes also called seal coats or surface treatments, chip seals are an asphalt binder sprayed on a prepared pavement surface, followed immediately by an application of aggregate (chips). Rolling then seats the chips in the binder.

Chip Seal Treatment Types

Using an asphalt emulsion is considered a “cold applied” chip seal even though the liquid temperature is typically between 110 and 150 degrees Fahrenheit. No smoke results from the application of emulsified asphalt. If modified paving asphalt is applied, it is considered a “hot applied” chip seal as the liquid application temperature is typically between 325 and 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

Chip Seal Performance Measures--Best Practices

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has a long history of designing, constructing, and maintaining chip seal or bituminous surface treatment pavements. However, to date WSDOT has not developed pavement performance indicators or models to predict chip seal service life, but rather assumes an average life of 6 to 8 years.

Asphalt Seal-Coat Treatments

Chip seals are the most common surface treatment for low-volume roads. A chip seal is an applicationof asphalt followed by an aggregate cover. The asphalt is usually applied as a hot asphalt cement, cutback asphalt, or emulsified asphalt.

High performance emulsion applications extend pavement life

High performance chip seals (sometimes known as engineered chip seals) incorporate a modified emulsion to give improved performance and service life. The modifier can be a polymer or crumb rubber or some other additive. These modifiers improve the durability, flexibility, and strength of the residual asphalt from the emulsion.
